Fire Alarm

Jessica pulled the screwdriver out of the holder as Spencer turned her laptop upside down when suddenly an alarm sounded.  “There wasn’t supposed to be a fire drill today,” Their instructor said out loud.

Thinking quickly, Spencer called for Shena to come over.  He said, “I’m going to need you and Jessica to help me down.  As long as I do not put weight on my left foot.”

Ms. Derrik, the instructor, said, “Spencer, if Jessica and Shena can help you down stairs, I’ll get your wheelchair.”

“Thanks Ms. Derrik,” Spencer said as the class started filing towards the stairs.

When they got to the stairs, Spencer stopped as Jessica and Shena stood at his side.  He put his arms around both of their shoulders for support, then lifted himself from his wheelchair.  “We’re going to have to work together.  I’ve never done this before,” Spencer explained as they started heading down the stairs together.

“We’ll take it one step at a time,” Shena said as they went down slowly.

Finally, they were on the ground floor and Ms. Derrik had his wheelchair at the ready.  Spencer sat down in it and they headed outside to the muster area.

Kimmie was waiting in the muster area and Spencer immediately pulled her into the biggest hug he could muster.  “I was so worried about you when I heard the alarm sounding, so I’m just so happy to see you right now,” Kimmie sobbed.
