College Reunion
Some time later, when Spencer is in college (studying 3-D computer animation), he sees Kimmie sitting on a bench. He doesn’t recognize her at first, but when she turns to look at something, Spencer sees her brilliant green eyes. When he sees her, EVERYTHING comes back in a whirlwind of memories. Kimmie still doesn’t recognize him, until he walks up to her (this took a lot of thinking on Spencer’s part) and says, “Hi Kimmie.”
Kimmie snaps to attention, wondering who this young man is. Then she looks at his face and notices a distinctive birthmark on his left cheek. She remembers that Spencer had the same mark. She goes wide-eyed and quickly covers her mouth to hide her gasp. It takes her a moment to get over it. “Spencer?” she says quietly. Spencer nods his head in silence. Kimmie soon comes to realize that Spencer is not longer that middle-school dweeb who hopelessly pursued a girl he could never have.
Spencer is sitting down in the cafeteria and has started eating. He’s alone. Unexpectedly, Kimmie comes over and asks, “Mind if I sit down?”
Spencer, still feeling awkward after the abrupt meeting a few minutes before, nervously says, “OK…” Kimmie pulls out the chair across from Spencer.
Nothing is said for a few minutes. Spencer has his laptop out and begins to work on an animation assignment. Then Kimmie breaks the silence. She sees his work and says, “That’s amazing!”
Spencer lets out a snorting laugh. “Oh, that’s just for class,” He says casually.
Kimmie says, “No, seriously, Spencer, that really is amazing!”
Spencer responds, “Why do you think it’s so amazing? It’s only an animation clip.”
Kimmie answers, “I’m in the 3-D Game Design Class. Some of the best gaming students can’t match those smooth transitions!”
Spencer remembers that the 3-D Game Design class is far more advanced than his 3-D Computer Animation class. Spencer says humbly, “I’m probably not good enough for that class.”
Kimmie thinks otherwise, “You wouldn’t mind if I showed your work to Ms. Boxer, would you?”
Spencer asks, “Will it get me into the class?”
Kimmie answers, “Maybe. Why did you ask?”
Spencer pauses, then answers, “My classmates are jerks. The only animations they make are either plotless or… or…”
Kimmie interrupts, “I used to be in that class, most unfortunately.” She rolls her eyes. “There was this one kid…” Spencer holds his breath, expecting the worst. Then Kimmie continues, “…his name was Tim?”
Spencer lets out a sigh of relief. He then says, “I went to high school with him.” A grin spreads across his face as he retells the story. “Tim was trying to become a track star, but his parents insisted that homework came first. All through high school, he didn’t do his work. SOMEHOW he kept his grades up, and SOMEHOW graduated number five in the class.”
Kimmie jokes, “Number five out of five graduates?” Spencer can’t help but laugh. Kimmie goes on to explain that Tim had a ridiculous crush on her and often made animations of Tim and Kimmie doing things they probably shouldn’t.
Just then, one of Spencer’s disgusting classmates shows up. He says, “Oh, are you two in love?” Before either Kimmie or Spencer can say otherwise, the classmate adds, “I can make a REAL good rendering of you two getting it on.”
Spencer, feeling extremely uncomfortable, says to Kimmie, “You done with lunch?” Kimmie nods her head, feeling the same way Spencer does. “Can we go,” Spencer asks Kimmie. Kimmie stands up and packs her things. Spencer correctly assumes this means yes. He saves his work and walks away with her. Kimmie puts her fingertips on his back and gently rubs him. Spencer wonders exactly what’s going on and doesn’t think for a second that an extremely close friendship is developing.
After lunch, the two have to go to their respective classes. Kimmie gives Spencer a hug, patting him on the shoulder. When Spencer is out of sight, Kimmie suddenly remembers that she has blocked Spencer on SocialFun.com a long time ago. She can’t remember why, but wants to be his friend both in real life and online. She takes out her smart phone, lifts the block, and sends a friend request to Spencer. Once he receives the message, he quickly accepts.
Meanwhile, Steffie is at a different college. She has kept in contact with her closest friends from Magnolia Grove High School. Steffie checks Kimmie’s profile and sees the message: “Kimmie is now friends with Spencer Talon.” Considering what happened in the past (she remembers EVERYTHING) she is taken aback. She looks up and says to nobody in particular, “How did that happen?”
